Letter written by Ito Hirobumi in London Dated letter to the Duke of Wellington
[Japan] Scarce, handwritten letter by the future, first Prime Minister of Japan, Ito Hirobumi (1841-1909) during his 1872 stay in London with the Iwakura Mission. The letter is addressed at the bottom to, 'His Grace Duke of Wellington', and reads, 'My Lord, I deem it a great honor to receive as the present the collection of Despatches from Your Grace who represents the illustrious house and title of their famous author so worthily. I shall forever prize the present as the memory of Your Grace, with whom it was my good fortune to have had the honor of being acquainted. I remain faithfully and respectfully yours, Hiroboumie Ito'. [sic]. Written on fine paper with the watermark of 'T.H. Saunders 1870' and watermark crest. Thomas Harry Saunders (1813-1870) was a well known British paper maker who was also famous for his watermarks.
