[Japan] Scarce carte de visite photo of the French Catholic missionary, Monsignor Bernard Petitjean (1829-1884), taken in Paris around 1867, one year after he was apointed Apostolic Vicar of Japan. Petitjean died in Nagasaki in 1884. The photographer, Antoine René Trinquart (1814-1871) operated a highly successful studio in central Paris at 23, rue Louis-le-Grand between 1861 and July 1869, when he moved to new premises at 10, rue de Pont-Mahon. His studio was celebrated for its portrait work and was patronised not only by members of Parisian high society but also by high-profile visitors from Spain, Latin America and, as the mount to this photograph testifies, the royal household of Prussia. Inscribed in pencil on rear, 'Mgr [Monsignor] Bernard Petitjean Japon'.
