Woodblock Printed Triptych of the British Consulate in Yokohama by Utagawa Hiroshige III
[Japan] Scarce, woodblock printed triptych showing the striking, then recently built British consulate in Yokohama that burned down after only a few years. The design was controversial and criticised by some Western residents in Yokohama. Interestingly, the title of the triptych doesn't mention that the building is the British consulate, just a foreign building on the Yokohama bund.
[Tokyo]. Masadaya Heikichi. April 1870.
Each panel approx. 35 x 24.5cm.
In good condition. Some age wear and marks. Remnants of mounts on corners on rear of each panel where the triptych was probably mounted. Otherwise unbacked with nice bleedthrough. u36121764
