CDV of Seven Japanese people by Ueno Hikoma Superb photo in very good condition
[Japan] Wonderful portrait of four Japanese men, three ladies and a dog, taken in Ueno's studio in Nagasaki. Ueno Hikoma (1838-1904) was one of Japan's pioneer photographers. He studied chemistry and later photography under the Dutch naval medical officer Johannes L. C. Pompe van Meerdervoort (1829–1908) who arrived in Nagasaki in 1857. After contact with Swiss photographer Pierre Rossier (1829 – c1890), Ueno decided to pursue a career as a photographer. In 1862, Ueno opened a commercial photographic studio by the Nakashima River in Nagasaki and also began importing cameras. He went on to have a close working relationship with Felice Beato and became especially well-known for his excellent portrait photography.
