CDV of Edmond Mondy taken by Uchida Kuichi
[Japan] Probably the only known photo of Edmund F[elix] Mondy (1845-1926) taken during his stay in Japan. He was hired by Henry Dyer on behalf of the Imperial College of Engineering in Tokyo as an expert on metallurgy and technical drawing. He worked with other well-known foreign experts including Edward Divers (1837-1912), John Milne (1850-1913), and Josiah Condor (1852-1920). The CDV shows Mondy with his wife [Eliza] and young son. Inscribed on rear (presumably by Mondy), 'Edmund F. Whitworth Mondy aged 2 years 4 months 20 days, 11th July, 1876. Edm. F. Mondy. Mrs Edm. F Mondy.' Interestingly, the famous photographer Uchida died in 1875 and his studio and stock were taken over by Kitaniwa Tsukuba.
Probably Tokyo. Uchida Kuichi. 1876.
