Japanese Biographies of Jay Gould and William H. Vanderbilt by Takahashi Yoshio

[Japan] Interesting pair of books that introduce famous US businessmen. The first volume is a 3rd edition from 1887 (the 1st and 2nd were published the year before in 1886) and quotes Jay Gould (1836-1892) in questionable English on the cover, 'The money is mightier than the sword'. His name is misspelled 'Goald' on the title page. The book is mostly text with just a few illustrations. The second book is a first edition from 1887 so presumably the books were bought at the same time. This work covers the life of William H. Vanderbilt (1821-1885) and is all Japanese text except for the illustrated frontispiece of Vanderbilt.

Tokyo. Ogura Magobei. 1887.

First volume: pp.159[1], [14], [4]. Second volume: pp.[2],144, [6]. Each approx. 18.6 x 12.5cm.

Both volumes in good condition. Covers a bit worn and bumped. The second volume has some writing in pink on the cover. Internally both very good. b36101714
