The Calendar of the Tokio Kaisei-Gakko Important, early University of Tokyo reference work

[Japan] The Calendar of the Tokio Kaisei-Gakko, or Imperial University of Tokio for the year 1876. Appears to be the first such book mentioning the Imperial University of Tokio [Tokyo] which was until 1877 known as Kaisei Gakko. The book contains an historical summary, regulations, courses available, and syllabuses. Mostly the text is in English but some parts are in French. Even the final examination questions in various subjects for 1876 are listed as well as the academic staff who wrote them. Of course many of the faculty were so-called oyatoi gaikokujin [hired foreigners] and their names and nationalities are also listed, including: Peter V[roman] Veeder, Horace Wilson, D[ivie] Bethune McCartee, Prospere Fortune Fouque, James Summers, William E[benezer] Grigsby, Robert William Atkinson, Robert Henry Smith, William Edwin Parson, Edward W. Syle, Horatio N. Allin, Leon Dury, Stephone Mangeot, G. Jewett Rockwell, Gottfried v[on] Wagener, James R. Wasson, Edmund Naumann, and Gustav Felix Berson. The Japanese academics listed include Toyama Masakazu, Enouye [Inoue] Yoshikazu, Kumazawa Zennan [Zen'an], Koga Moritaro, Yamaoka Giro [Jiro], Yamagawa Kenjiro, Uyeno [Ueno] Tsugumitsu, Yamaoka Nariaki, Nakaoka Toshiaki, Nakano Toshio, Kano Tomonobu, Osada Ginzo, Wada Tsunashiro, Taga Ayato, Shoji Ikki, Shimoaki Motojiro, Oshima Bun, and Niwa Tadamichi.
