Photo Album presented to Professor Ludwig Riess with 128 identified portrait photos of his Japanese students and friends

[Japan] Deluxe, silk-covered photo album presented to Professor Ludwig Riess (1861-1928), who first came to Japan in 1887 on a contract with the Department of Education as professor of history at the University of Tokyo. According to the Meiji Portraits website, his initial contract was for three years but he continued in his position until 1902 when he left Japan. This album was presented to him at that time. Riess introduced Western methods of historiography into the Japanese university curriculum. These methods included a reliance on primary sources, an emphasis on narrative history, and a commitment to writing history from a neutral point of view. In 1888, he married Ōtsuka Fuku, the daughter of his cook, and they had one son and four daughters. He wrote a book titled, 'Allerlei aus Japan', about his 15 years' experience in Japan. He died at 67 on a visit to the USA as an exchange teacher in 1928 when he developed a sudden fever, possibly as the result of an allergic reaction after being stung by an insect. The 128 photos in the album are all CDV size and are in alphabetical order. In the album only first initials are given so any given names and dates listed below were added by us. Many of the students in the album would go on to became important researchers and academics in variould fields. Following is a complete list of the 128 men photographed and named in the album: T.
