Some Japanese Flowers by Kazumasa Ogawa Special edition with 38 chromo-collotype photo plates
[Japan] A stunning, deluxe publication by Japanese collotype photo pioneer Ogawa Kazumasa (1860-1929), who studied in the US in the early 1880s. These colour collotype photos were advanced technology at the time and very expensive to produce. Ogawa made cheaper editions of this title with paper covers and only 8-10 plates, but deluxe editions like this one are very scarce, even more so in this condition and with the original folding case. There was another edition published in 1897 with 37 photos, but this 1896 edition has 38 plates. The Getty Museum has a similar book. The photos are impressive and include lilies, irises, chrysanthemums, roses, peonies and more. It would seem that Ogawa may have published a small number of these more deluxe editions in order to present them to friends, acquaintances, and/or institutions.
Tokyo. K. Ogawa, F.R.P.S. Sold by Kelly & Walsh Ltd. 1896.
40 leaves with tissue interleaves as issued. 38.9 x 28.7cm.
In very good condition. Silk covered decorative boards with minor age wear. Internally very good with only a hint of wear. Minor creasing to title page near binding (but this may be related to the binding method). Presumably came with a folding case (as the 1897 edition did) but there is no case present. Overall very good. p36091705
