Large, Folding Flyer for The Japanese Village Held in Hyde Park from 1885-1887
[Japan] Taking advantage of the era of 'Things Japanese' when everything Japanese was in fashion, the somewhat enigmatic entrepreneur, Tannaker Buhicrosan (supposedly a Dutch-Japanese man who first came to Japan in 1859 and whose real name was Frederik Blekman) came up with the idea for a Japanese Village in London. He had fled Japan after getting in trouble over pocketing money on warship deals between the French and the Japanese government. At Hyde Park in London, visitors were welcomed from January 1885 until June 1887 and overall it was a huge success with over one million visitors attending. A fire destroyed much of the village in May 1885 but it was rebuilt by December 1885 from when this flyer would date from as it mentions the rebuilt facilities as being, '...as nearly as possible fire-proof.'
