Superb, large, dated manuscript drawing of Mountain hawk-eagle by Nakayama Osayoshi

[Japan] Very impressive manuscript illustration of a mountain hawk-eagle (or kumataka in Japanese) shown in intricate detail. The bird of prey is shown facing right and and at upper left is another illustration of the head only facing left. Nakayama Osayoshi (1808-49) produced some very fine work painting flowers and birds (kachoga) and his work titled 'Manatsuruzu' (illustration of a white-naped crane), painted in 1842, is designated as a cultural property of Tokushima City in Japan. He was a student of Hashimoto Gaho, who was a master of the Kano school in the Meiji era. Osayoshi died in Edo [Tokyo] at the age of 42 and Gaho supposedly said that if Osayoshi had lived he would have been a better painter than he.
