Woodblock Printed Triptych of Newly-Opened Yokohama Wonderful, early work by Sadahide Gountei

[Japan] One of Sadahide's most iconic woodblock prints showing a bustling Yokohama less than one year after her port opened in July 1859. The censor seal on the prints indicate this triptych was published in February 1860 when only a handful of Westerners were living there. Bundles of silk can be seen being transported and the cherry blossoms let us know this was a scene in spring.

Bakurocho [Tokyo]. Yamaguchiya Tōbei. 1860.

Left panel 35.7 x 25.4cm. Centre panel 35.7 x 24cm. Right panel 35.7 x 25.4cm.

In good to very good condition. A few old, neat repairs and minor age wear. The centre panel has been trimmed a little and the triptych appears to have been joined at some point and then separated. There are some small, old, circular stickers running down each edge where the print was joined but these are only visible on the rear of the panels. Unbacked with nice bleedthrough. u36071661
