Kendo Hitorigeiko Early self-practice guide by Yamamoto Kansuke

[Japan] Wonderful, illustrated book showing the various kendo moves one needs to learn to become proficient. In kendo, wooden swords (called shinai) are used instead of real swords and is still widely practiced today in Japan. Interestingly, the preface is dated 1546 and the book was written by the famous general, Yamamoto Kansuke (aka Haruyuki) who was born in 1501 and died in 1561. This work was published in the late Edo era (c1860s). Only a couple of copies found at institutes in Japan.

Tōbu. Tanaka Yūshō ken zōhan. ND (c1860s).

27 leaves. 11.6 x 17.5cm.

In good condition. Some minor worm trails affecting a few leaves towards the end of the book and the final two pages have more noticeable worming. The illustrations are largely unaffected. Covers a bit worn but original title slip present. b36051617
