Scarce photo of Ainu people in Sakhalin taken by Anton Chekhov
[Japan] Very scarce, original photo of three Ainu men, one Ainu woman and two Ainu children. This photo is known to have been taken by the well-known Russian playwright and physician, Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) during his 3-month visit to Sakhalin, just north of Hokkaido, in 1890. He also took photos of prisoners and other people in the harsh conditions of the island during his trip.
Anton Chekhov. 1890. 8.2 x 11.4cm.
Except for the loss at the top left coner, the photo is in good condition with nice contrast. There is a mark on the left leg of the man sitting at far right. General age wear and an old pen mark on the reverse. nb36040002
