CDV of Fr. Alfred Pettier early photo of the French missionary
[Japan] Scarce, early carte de visite photo of the French missionary, Alfred Eugene Marie Pettier (1843-1930), who spent many years in Japan. He is listed in the Japan Directory for 1870 in Hakodate and is known to have been the first chaplain of a Catholic seminary in Nagasaki. Later photos show him with a long beard so this particular photo appears to have been taken when he was in his late twenties. Inscribed on rear 'A. Pettier Mifs [missionary] au Japan'.
