Photo Album of Nagasaki Chinzei Gakuin Founding Missionaries and more 52 large format photos including 2 panoramas

[Japan] Unique photo album containing 52 large format photos including images of the earliest principals of Chinzei Gakuin in Nagasaki, which started as Cobleigh Seminary in 1881. One group photo of four missionaries with Japanese students identifies the four Americans as John Carrol Davison (1843-1928), who came to Nagasaki in 1873, Herbert Buell Johnson (1858-1926), who arrived in Nagasaki in 1887 and was principal of Chinzei Gakuin from 1893-94, Epperson Robert Fullerson (1859-1940), who came to Nagasaki in 1889 and was principal from 1894-1901, and Charles Bishop (1850-1941), who first came to Nagasaki in 1885 and was the 3rd principal of the school. There are some impressive photos of the buildings that were built and used for the school, also with a variety of photos taking in Nagasaki, Dejima, Kyoto, a couple of Nagoya castle, one each of the gunboat HMS Leander and gunboat USS Marion, one three-photo panorama of Nagasaki and one folding panorama of a missionary building with numerous people, along with other scenic photos and temple views. The album appears to date from around 1890. Most likely more than one photographer.

Album measures approx. 36 x 27cm.

In very good condition. The binding has been professionally repaired. Internally very good with only minor age wear. One panorama with a short tear at fold. p35061429
