Famous Views in Kyoto with 20 coloured copperplate prints plus map
[Japan] Very scarce, colour, copperplate printed book illustrating famous sites in Kyoto. Published by the Kyoto Hotel Tokiwa (established in 1888) and, with English titles on the prints and map, clearly aimed at the growing number of Western travellers. The detailed illustrations all by Kyoto-based copperplate printmaker, Ishida Yūnen (1844-1916). Although the cover title is, 'Kyoto Meishi Goju Kei' [50 Views of Famous Places in Kyoto]', it appears only this volume was published and contains a selection of 20 views and collates with a couple of other known copies, except for one at the British Museum which appears to have 30 illustrations. Most prints are dated 1890 and a few 1891. In very nice marbled boards.

In very good condition. Corners bumped and a bit chipped. The spine covering has been replaced and there are a few minor repairs to folds. One leaf has small loss at one corner. Otherwise very good. b35081454
