Manuscript Scroll of How to wear Samurai Armour by Ise Heizo Sadatake

[Japan] A striking, hand-drawn and coloured scroll showing, step-by-step, the proper way for a samurai to dress. This informative work covers all eighteen steps, including underwear, sleeve guards, arrow and quiver, gloves, armour, sword and so on, in the correct order. Ise (Heizo) Sadatake (1718-84) wrote numerous illustrated works on the correct protocol for samurai and this scroll appears to date from the late Edo era (c1800-1840). The scroll is titled, 'Yoshiie Ason Yoroi Chakuyō Shidai' in Japanese.

Approx. 560cm x 27.5cm.

In good condition. Old stains affecting a small area of illustrations near joins. Still highly readable and would display very nicely. Scroll has been professionally mounted and is preserved in a custom made box. m30040117
