CDV of Nanjo Bunyu Taken in London
[Japan] Scarce photo of Nanjo Bunyu (1849-1927), the Buddhist scholar and priest, who was the first Japanese person to study Buddhism at Oxford University. He left Japan in 1876 and studied Sanskrit and Buddhist literature under Dr. Max Muller whilst at Oxford. He returned to Japan in 1884 and wrote a number of works on Buddhism. His name was also spelled Nanjio Bunyiu.
