CDV of Sonoda Kokichi Taken in London. Signed and inscribed.

[Japan] Scarce CDV of Sonoda Kokichi (1848-1923), who would go on to become president of Yokohama Specie Bank. He grew up in Kagoshima and studied at Daigaku Nanko (which became the University of Tokyo). He worked for the education ministry and foreign ministry during his career and spent around 15 years in England from 1874. He was made a baron in 1918. He was crushed to death at his home in Ninomiya in the 1923 Kanto Earthquake at the age of 76. Inscribed by Sonoda to Arthur Diosy (1856-1923), who would go on to establish the Japan Society of London in 1891.
