CDV of Torii Tadabumi taken in Boston
[Japan] Scarce CDV of Torii Tadabumi (1847-1914), who went on the Iwakura Mission in 1871. Torii got permission to study in the US and apparently left the Mission in April 1872. The CDV was apparently removed from a CDV album of Washington & Lee University (Virginia) students, but Torii appears to have studied at Phillips Academy in Boston, so it is also possible Torii gave the CDV to someone on a visit to Virginia. After returning to Japan he worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and later become a viscount as well as Consul to the Kingdom of Hawaii. He was 68 years old when he died. The rear of the CDV is inscribed by Torii, 'Yours truly. T.B. Torii. Tokio, Japan' and also signed by him in Japanese.
