Return of Student Interpreters in China, Japan, and Siam 1847-72 Important Reference List with Dates and Salaries
Presented to the House of Commons by Command of Her Majesty. Informative list containing the names, locations, dates, positions, and salaries of all the British interpreters who were sent to China, Japan and Siam between 1847 and 1872. The list also shows their positions as of 1872 and more than a few became consuls or vice-consuls at various cities in these three countries. The Japan entries include the well-known figures, Satow, Fletcher, MacDonald, Aston, McClatchie and Gubbins. Importantly, the list also includes pre-1872 dates of retirement and/or death.
