スイス人写真家ロッシエ（1829-86）は、1859年に来日、最初の商業写真を撮りました。裏に、「Views in Japan. 76. Japanese Workmen, in summer costume. These Workmen are tattooed from head to foot in a most remarkable manner the designs being of the most elaborate description, but owing to the tattooing being blue, they are not very visible in the photographic copies」が書いてある。
