[Japan] Scarce photo of US physician, educator and missionary, Duane B. Simmons (1834-89), taken one year before his death. Simmons was one of the first Westerners to live in Japan, arriving in 1859 along with Guido Verbeck and Samuel Robbins Brown. This image is larger than a carte de visite but smaller than a cabinet card.
