Paul Carus (1852-1919) studied comparitive religion and philosophy and was the first editor of the Open Court Publishing Co., which was established by his father-in-law, Edward Hegeler in 1887. The art in this lovely book was by Suzuki Kasson. The copyright in English is 1896 whereas the Japanese colophon states 1897.
