[Japan] Illustrated and Printed by T. Hasegawa, Tokyo, Japan for The Open Court Publishing Co., Chicago. Paul Carus (1852-1919) studied comparitive religion and philosophy and was the first editor of the Open Court Publishing Co., which was established by his father-in-law, Edward Hegeler in 1887. The art in this lovely book was by Suzuki Kasson. The copyright in English is 1896 whereas the Japanese colophon states 1897.

In very good condition. Covers a touch faded. Silk string ties professionally replaced. Internally very good with only minor wear.
