Six CDVs of Officers of HBMS Audacious taken in Nagasaki by Ueno Hikoma
[Japan] Very nice group of six carte de visites by Ueno. Four of the men are identified as crew of the HBMS Audacious (which was on the Japan Station in the mid-1870s): W. H. Stewart, who is listed in the Japan Directory of 1876 as a 'Surgeon'. Egerton Beresford Cleeve, as 'Midshipman'. H. B. Collins, also as 'Surgeon', and what appears to be William S.P. Graves, 'Lieutenant', who is photographed with presumably his dog or, possibly, a dog owned by Ueno. Five of the CDVs have the same mount but one (of W.H. Stewart), interestingly has a different design with '"Rising Sun" Office, Nagasaki.' printed at the bottom. Two are unidentified but are most likely HBMS Audacious crew as well.
