Cabinet Card Photo of John Fraser, Gus Farley, Grinnell, Chandler and Milton Taken in Yokohama by Felix [Felice] Beato
[Japan] Wonderful cabinet card photo showing five Westerners most likely taken at Beato's studio in Yokohama. Inscribed on the front, 'Yokohama Japan 1867' and on the rear, 'Yokohama Japan 1868. 1 Fraser, 2 Farley, 3 Grinnell, 4 Chandler 5 Milton [?]' and below that in another hand, 'One of Felix Beato's photographs taken in Yokohama in 1867. To G. Farley from C.L. Austin. Boston Oct 24, 1897.' John Alexander Fraser and Gus (Gustavus) Farley both came to Japan in 1866 and first worked for Augustine Heard & Co. (Farley and Heard were related by marriage). In 1875 Farley and Fraser established Fraser, Farley & Co. and in 1882, Fraser, Farley & Varnum, specialising in the tea trade. Important photo as it shows what one of Beato's studio backgrounds looked like. The five sitters look quite relaxed.
16.6 x 11.2cm.
In very good condition. Mount a bit darkened and minor stains at lower corners. A bit of wear at corners and edges. Photo itself is very clear with good contrast.
