Colour, woodblock print of Westerners and Large Camera Most likely the first ever illustration of a camera in a ukiyoe

Important, colour woodblock print showing some Westerners and a very large camera. As the publisher's seal on the print indicates a date of November, 1860, it is thought that this image shows Mathew Brady and his camera about to take photos of the Japanese embassy that visited Washington in June, 1860. The final image here shows the illustration from Frank Leslie's Illustrated News of Jun 6, 1860 that appears to be the image that this woodblock print was based on.

Single page as issued. Artist: Utagawa Yoshikazu. Nov 1860.

36.8 x 24.4cm.

In good condition. A small area of worming in the centre on the camera and the young boy as well as another couple of smaller worm trails. The print has a very thin backing paper so the trails do not penetrate right through. A small stain in the margin at centre left and general age wear. Untrimmed. u33010832
