Victor Georges Appert (1850-1934), born in the Champagne region of France came to Japan in 1879 on the invitation of the Meiji government. Also published in 3 separate volumes, this is the scarce single volume first edition in very good shape complete with the two large folded sheets (one each in front and rear pockets) as issued. Very informative work with text in French.

Back cover pocket with a folding chart printed in red & black approx. 38.5 x 54.5cm; "Noms des Peintres," with artist calligraphic signatures & their chop marks. Book measures 17 x 12cm.
In very good condition. Title page and back (blank section) of map with the small previous owner name-stamp of George R. Brush M.D. U.S. Navy who was a surgeon & medical inspector from 1861-1894. Some minor edge wear and rubbing to the binding, a little loose in spots on the boards; front endpaper inner hinge paper splitting; contents, including the map, painter-marks plate and heraldic illustrations clean and in very good condition.
