Medium format photo of George N. Mitchell in rickshaw Early, uncoloured albumen photo
Interesting photo of a Westerner being pulled in a rickshaw by two Japanese rickshaw men. The mount reads, 'Geo. N. Mitchell, Jinricksha and Coolies'. At first glance, 'Mitchell' looks like 'Witehill' or 'Mitehill' or 'Mitchill', but we believe it is 'Mitchell'. According to the Japan Weekly Mail of July 1, 1871, a George N. Mitchell arrived from San Francisco on the vessel 'Japan' on June 25, 1871 so this is almost certainly that man. We have been unable to ascertain who he was and how long he stayed in Japan.
Photographer unknown. c1871.
21 x 16.8cm.
In good condition. Mounted on large card. There is some minor damage to the top right of the photo but well outside the oval area. A few stray marks to the mount but nothing serious.
