Medium format photo of the grave of Captain Barnett at the Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery
One of probably very few photos ever taken of the Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery in the early days of the Meiji Era. Capt. C. J. Barnett was a captain in the 1st Battalion, 10th Regiment who died in Yokohama on April 8, 1870 aged 29 years. 'The Grave of the late Capt. Barnett's' is written in pencil at the top of the mount. Also written at the lower left of the mount is 'T. Orton's grave' marked with an 'x'. Orton was a lieutenant in the same regiment who died at 25 years old on January 4, 1871. This photo was no doubt taken sometime before that as Orton's grave cannot yet be seen.
