Momotaro - The Japanese Fairy Tales - For School and Home Use Orig. tr. by David Thompson & Ed. by Mrs. T. H. James

Very scarce edition of one of Hasegawa's plain paper fairy tales. Art by Sensai Eitaku (aka Kobayashi Eitaku). This one was clearly made for English learning with the story of Momotaro divided into five chapters with short vocabulary lists at the beginning of each. Also, this is the only book by Hasegawa we have ever seen that has both Thompson and James listed in the colophon. Thompson having written the original translation for Hasegawa in 1885 with this heretofore unknown edition being edited by Kate James as an educational book. Plain, light brown covers.

Tokyo. Hasegawa/Kobunsha. 1886 (Japanese colophon date at rear is Meiji 19 (1886) but dated Meiji 20 (1887) on the Japanese title page). The English title page is also dated 1887.

22pp. 18.3 x 12.4cm.

In very good condition. A few stray marks and general wear but nothing serious. Colour, woodblock printed cover seems to have been misbound (or perhaps not as it is untitled).
