The Practical Photographer Jan-Dec 1896. Japanese Double Number edited by Matthew Surface
Mysteriously rare volume (even though 10,000 copies were supposedly published) that contains a complete run of twelve issues of The Practical Photographer from January to December 1896. The September issue (pp.225-256) is the Japanese Double Number and features articles on the history of photography in Japan including various photographic reproductions. There are also two lovely, single page crepe paper prints by Hasegawa included, one at the beginning and one at the end of the issue. The articles are by W.K. Burton, Reiji Esaki, Matsuchi Nakajima, Yuji Isawa (editor of Shashin Sowa), I. Ishikawa, Seibei Kajima, and Asakuma Futami. It states that Burton was so interested in the process of making crepe paper, he photographed the process and wrote an article about it.
