[Japan] 'with their Biographies - accompanied by an English translation made by G. Takahashi' (Vol. 1) along with 'Short Biographies of Emineni [sic] Japanese in Ancient and Modern Times each with a Characteristic Illustration' (Vol.2). Extraordinarily well-preserved pair of books with their original, woodblock printed paper sleeves. Volume 1 contains a total of ten superb, color woodblock prints by Ogata Gekkō (four), and two each by Arai Yoshimune, Toyohara Chikanobu, and Mizuno Toshikata. Volume 2 also has ten prints with five by Sensai (Kobayashi) Eitaku and five by Ogata Gekkō. Each biography is printed in Japanese, Chinese, and English.

Each in fine condition. Volume 1 has a very small worm trail affecting the upper left margin of the first few pages. Volume 2 has some foxing inside the front cover and one small stain on one page. Otherwise both volumes are in fine, almost as-new condition. b35121505
