CDV of Identified Japanese Ambassadors Taken in London by Caldesi

[Japan] Wonderful carte de visite showing four members of the First Japanese embassy to Europe taken in London in 1862. From left to right: Kawasaki Domin (1831-81), Saito Dainoshin (1822-71), Okazaki Tozaemon (c1835- ?), and Ota Genzaburo (1835-95). Kawasaki was a doctor from Saga, Saito was from present day Gunma prefecture and is known to have helped repel an attack on the British Legation at Tozenji in Edo in 1861. Okazaki was one of the officials and Ota was an interpreter. Leonida Caldesi (1822-91) was an Italian-born photographer who had a studio in London from around 1860 to 1866.
