[Japan] Impressive, Japanese, copperplate printed map showing the eastern and western hemispheres along with inset maps of the North and South Poles as well as explanatory maps of various geographical features such as islands, peninsulas, mountains etc. Nagata Hosei (1844-1911) was a gifted student who went on to become an educator who specialised in Hokkaido and the Ainu people. In 1873, he became the first Japanese person to translate the bible from English into Japanese.
