Woodblock Print of American Man on Horse by Utagawa Yoshitomi
[Japan] Interesting woodblock print showing an American man riding his horse while smoking and his tattooed betto (horse groom) partially visible behind the horse. Signed Ichigeisai Yoshitomi at lower right and with a censor seal indicating this was published in the 2nd month of the 1st year of the Bunkyu era which equates to March 1861. There were fewer than 40 Americans living in Yokohama at that time.
Single, oban-sized print. 37.4 x 25.5cm.
In good condition. Some remnants of glue along top (probably from being affixed to backing paper at top). A few small black marks at bottom and two tiny holes at lower left corner. Otherwise very good and unbacked. u34111288
