Guide Book of Yedo - The Tokio Guide The first English guidebook to Tokyo

[Japan] Aside from the early directories that contained outlines of cities in Japan, Keeling's Guide to Japan (1880) is considered to be the first English guide book to Japan. Then Satow & Hawes' 1881 guide was the first comprehensive work on travelling Japan. Both books are very scarce. This work, though brief and covering only Tokyo, predates Keeling's Guide by six years and is extremely scarce. The cover states the book is 'By a Resident' and this is William Elliot Griffis (1843-1928), who lived in Japan from 1870-74. He also published separate guides to Yokohama, Nikko, and Kyoto, which also seldom appear on the market.
