Eigo Sen - Part 1. Vols 1 & 2 Very scarce edition of Medhurst's work published in Japan

Wonderful pair of large format books that were copied from W. H. Medhurst's vocabulary published in Batavia in 1830. Seven volumes (Part One, Volumes 1-3 and Part Two, Volumes 1-4) were published from 1857 and 1863 and these are the first two volumes of Part One that were published together. Both volumes with the Yokohama shop label of Morookaya Ihei reading, 'For Sale. The largest assortment of Japanese Colored Pictures [sic] Books and engravings on hand and at reasonable prices. Morokaya Ihe [sic], Bentendori, Gotchomi [Go-chome]'. The books were copied by Murakami Hidetoshi (or Eishun) and corrected by Inoue Shuri. The original title page of the first edition in Batavia that read '1830' was mistakenly copied as '1839'.

No place. No publisher. 1857.

Vol.1 - 82pp. Vol. 2 - 78pp. Each 16 x 18.2cm.

Volume 1 with wear to covers and string binding has almost gone so the pages are loose. This can easily be replaced at cost. Internally very good. Some old pencil calculations in the top margin of two pages. Minor age wear and minor loss to title slip. Volume 2 is very good with only minor wear. String binding is loose but generally holding. One worm trail affecting the top margin of a few pages. Otherwise very good. nb32110010
