Guide Map of Nikko with scarce Key edited by Sugie Kinzo
'Guide Map of Nikkosan, Japan' in original sleeve along with 'Key to the Guide Map of Nikkosan, Japan' which has copyright date of 1884 but was actually published 2 years later in 1886 (probably at the request of foreign visitors). The key has thick, decorative boards and is comprehensive with 189 places mentioned and all numbered on the map. What must be, if not the earliest, one of the earliest guides to Nikko in English. A very nice pair of items.
Nikko (Tochigi). Taguchi Tohei. 1884 (Map) & 1886 (Key). Map folds out to 50 x 73cm (folded up 17.3 x 12.6cm). Key is 18.7 x 13cm. 18pp+2 double-sided lithographed pages including small map and the fare table and Japanese colophon are loose in the rear for some reason.
Maps is in fine condition and looks to be unused. A few tiny creases. The key is very good with very minor wear to cover edges. First page (with English colophon) a bit darkened. Otherwise very good throughout. b31120423
